Sweet Fury is Zoomer Magazine’s Number One Pick for the month of January

Marking Time: 10 Novels to Read in January

The seemingly endless days will fly by when you’re engrossed in new fiction from Charmaine Wilkerson, Anita Desai, Han Kang and Adam Haslett

BY Nathalie Atkinson / January 9th, 2025

January is the same length as six other months in the calendar, yet it always feels twice as long. One theory is that our experience of time is warped because it follows December, the busiest month of the year. Whatever the reason, new fiction will make the endless days fly by. This month we highlight a rich historical debut, a Nobel Laureate’s latest and an engaging coming-of-age saga, as well as offerings from acclaimed favourites like Anita Desai, Adam Haslett and Charmaine Wilkerson.

Sweet Fury by Sash Bischoff

The accomplished New York theatre director, who studied creative writing at Princeton University under Jeffrey Eugenides and Joyce Carol Oates, makes her debut with this riveting tale of life (and abuse of power) imitating art. When actress Lila Crayne is cast in a modern stage adaptation of Tender is the Night and begins working with a therapist to research the role, the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel’s narrative about an analyst who falls for a patient mirrors what happens next – with a few additional literary twists.
